Larimar Frequently Asked Questions
What is “Larimar” & where is it found?
Larimar is a rare and extraordinary form of blue pectolite – It is known by a variety of names, such as ‘Atlantis stone' and ‘dolphin stone'. The variety of names represents different aspects and characteristics of the stone. The only known source of Larimar is a remote mountainous region of the Dominican Republic. The source of the gemstone was discovered in 1974, although the inhabitants of the region and their ancestors have long been aware of the stone.

How was it discovered and named “LARIMAR”?
In the 1950s, the residents of a small fishing village found blue pebbles washed up on the local beach near the mouth of a river. An artist from the city began traveling to the village to buy the stones for his work. When he needed more than could be found on the beach, the local villagers set out to find the source. They finally discovered blue rocks along one of the tributaries of the Bahoruco River. Since then, the mining of Larimar has brought a boon to the local people, where often many generations of the same family working together in different aspects of production.
The stone was named by Miguel Mendez after his beautiful young daughter LARIssa and the Spanish word for sea, MAR.

How is LARIMAR formed?
It is thought that the Gemstone was formed by a secondary volcanic process. Some time after the initial eruption, the volcanic lava settled and cooled. During this process cracks and fissures formed within the lava. Hydrothermal fluid (mineral rich superheated steam from deep within the earth) under high pressure was forced to the surface. In the process, it flowed through the cracks and fissures (and other volcanic chimneys and tubes) where it cooled and crystallized into the stone we see today.

What is the color range of LARIMAR?
It comes in a wide variety of colors ranging from gentle greens to the deepest blue. It has been called the caribbean gemstone, not only because of the location it is found, but also because of the colors, which mimic perfectly the variations of color of the Caribbean Sea. The color variation and patterning (a result of the cooling effect during crystallization) are what make the stone so unique and alluring.

How is LARIMAR mined?
It is best to mine the stone by hand only, as dynamite or heavy machinery can destroy it. The local villagers dig shafts into the mountain and then begin to tunnel around looking for deposits. Once a vein is located they follow the fissure to its source hoping to find even larger deposits. It can take many weeks of excavation to locate a vein, and even then, there is a small chance that the stone found will be a grade suitable for use in jewelry. Know more about Larimar.
